Business is Personal
You know the saying: “It’s not personal, it’s business?" I believe the opposite. Business is personal. People want to work with someone they know and trust. That’s why this page exists—to help you get to know me and decide if I’m the right person to help your business grow.
We won’t really know until we talk, but here’s a glimpse into who I am, what I value, and what I’ve done—so far. When you're ready, reach out. I'd love to hear your story.

The Heart Behind Sandbox Communications
When Heather McElrath founded Sandbox Communications, she didn’t just create a marketing agency—she built a reflection of her personal mission and life experiences. Heather’s journey hasn’t been linear, but it’s been rich with lessons, growth, and a commitment to bringing more joy and laughter into the world.
From Rock Bottom to Following Her Heart
A decade ago, Heather found herself at her lowest. It was during that challenging time that she realized the importance of following her heart and embracing her true self.
Today, her mission is clear: to bring joy and laughter into the world.
That philosophy is at the core of Sandbox Communications, where she helps small businesses connect with their audiences through authentic and engaging digital marketing strategies, local SEO, and clear, confidence-boosting messaging.
Her motto? Stop doing things just because “that’s the way they are.” Life and work should be meaningful, and Heather believes wholeheartedly that we all have the power to choose how we live and who we want to be—even if it’s not what others expect.
Fun Isn’t a Four-Letter Word
Heather champions the idea that work doesn’t have to be boring, hard, or stressful. “Fun isn’t a four-letter word,” she says. She believes we can approach life and business with playfulness, creativity, and a sense of wonder.
That spirit is why she named her company Sandbox Communications—a nod to the joy and curiosity of children playing in a sandbox: building castles, solving problems, and creating without fear.
The name also nods to Heather’s lifelong connection to tech. In IT, a sandbox is where you test and explore before launching. It’s the perfect metaphor for how she approaches digital strategy: experimenting, innovating, and finding what works best for each client.
From Pony Rides to Big Cities
Heather’s childhood in Ophir, California—a tiny, former gold-mining town—shaped her sense of independence and grit. It’s where she once rode her pony to school on weekends to meet friends.
That rural chapter contrasts sharply with later life, where she worked in high-rise offices for a global bank in Manhattan. These vastly different experiences gave Heather a rare perspective: blending small-town hustle with big-city insight.
A Life of Moving, Learning, and Perspective
Heather’s love of technology began early, growing up in a family deeply rooted in the 1970s IT industry. With constant relocations tied to her parents’ work, she had lived in 14 homes by age 14. Since then, she’s moved more than 40 times across seven states—including California (her roots), New York City (her heart), and Virginia (her home).
Each move expanded her worldview—and her resume. Heather has worked across:
-
Financial services & fintech
-
Nonprofits & education
-
Government & policy
-
Agriculture, environment & technology
This broad experience lets her tailor strategies that actually fit the industries and people she supports.
A Career Built on Communication
Heather knew early she wanted to work in communications. She earned a journalism degree, then built a career spanning all facets of marketing—from PR and advertising to messaging, branding, and SEO strategy.
Today, she supports small business owners by:
-
Simplifying complex marketing challenges
-
Clarifying their brand voice
-
Boosting local visibility through SEO and Google Business Profiles
Your Success Is Her Mission
At the heart of everything Heather does is one simple goal: helping small businesses succeed. She’s more than a marketing consultant—she’s a partner, a guide, and a cheerleader who believes in her clients and their potential.
Her unique perspective—shaped by decades of change, challenge, and creativity—lets her spot opportunities others miss. Through Sandbox Communications, she brings clarity, authenticity, and a little joy back to the marketing process.
